Vashti (וַשְׁתִּי, washtiy). The queen of King Ahasuerus of Persia. She was deposed when she defied the king (Esth 1:9–12, 15–21). The king summoned her on the seventh day of his great feast to show her off to his guests, but she refused to come. The furious king sought the advice of his experts, who counseled him to depose her because she had disrespected his position. They also warned that women throughout Persia and Media might follow her example of defiance against her husband if she were not punished. No affiliation can be confirmed between Vashti and Amestris, who Greek historian Herodotus says is the wife of Ahasuerus (called Xerxes in Herodotus; Histories 7.61; 9.109–112).
