Amos 9:8–12 — The New International Version (NIV)

“Surely the eyes of the Sovereign Lord

are on the sinful kingdom.

I will destroy it

from the face of the earth.

Yet I will not totally destroy

the descendants of Jacob,”

declares the Lord.

“For I will give the command,

and I will shake the people of Israel

among all the nations

as grain is shaken in a sieve,

and not a pebble will reach the ground.

10 All the sinners among my people

will die by the sword,

all those who say,

‘Disaster will not overtake or meet us.’

11 “In that day

“I will restore David’s fallen shelter—

I will repair its broken walls

and restore its ruins—

and will rebuild it as it used to be,

12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom

and all the nations that bear my name,”

declares the Lord, who will do these things.

Amos 9:8–12 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom,

And I will destroy it from off the face of the earth;

Saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the Lord.

For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations,

Like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword,

Which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.

11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen,

And close up the breaches thereof;

And I will raise up his ruins,

And I will build it as in the days of old:

12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen,

Which are called by my name,

Saith the Lord that doeth this.

Amos 9:8–12 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“I, the Sovereign Lord,

am watching this sinful nation of Israel.

I will destroy it

from the face of the earth.

But I will never completely destroy the family of Israel,”

says the Lord.

“For I will give the command

and will shake Israel along with the other nations

as grain is shaken in a sieve,

yet not one true kernel will be lost.

10 But all the sinners will die by the sword—

all those who say, ‘Nothing bad will happen to us.’

11 “In that day I will restore the fallen house of David.

I will repair its damaged walls.

From the ruins I will rebuild it

and restore its former glory.

12 And Israel will possess what is left of Edom

and all the nations I have called to be mine.”

The Lord has spoken,

and he will do these things.

Amos 9:8–12 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful kingdom,

And I will destroy it from the face of the earth;

Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”

Says the Lord.

“For surely I will command,

And will sift the house of Israel among all nations,

As grain is sifted in a sieve;

Yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.

10 All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword,

Who say, ‘The calamity shall not overtake nor confront us.’

11 “On that day I will raise up

The tabernacle of David, which has fallen down,

And repair its damages;

I will raise up its ruins,

And rebuild it as in the days of old;

12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom,

And all the Gentiles who are called by My name,”

Says the Lord who does this thing.

Amos 9:8–12 — New Century Version (NCV)

I, the Lord God, am watching the sinful kingdom Israel.

I will destroy it

from off the earth,

but I will not completely destroy

Jacob’s descendants,” says the Lord.

“I am giving the command

to scatter the nation of Israel among all nations.

It will be like someone shaking grain through a strainer,

but not even a tiny stone falls through.

10 All the sinners among my people

will die by the sword—

those who say,

‘Nothing bad will happen to us.’

11 “The kingdom of David is like a fallen tent,

but in that day I will set it up again

and mend its broken places.

I will rebuild its ruins

as it was before.

12 Then Israel will take over what is left of Edom

and the other nations that belong to me,”

says the Lord,

who will make it happen.

Amos 9:8–12 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Behold, the eyes of the Lord Jehovah are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; save that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith Jehovah. For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, like as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least kernel fall upon the earth. 10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say, The evil shall not overtake nor meet us.

11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old; 12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations that are called by my name, saith Jehovah that doeth this.

Amos 9:8–12 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Behold, the eyes of the Lord Jehovah are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth: only that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith Jehovah. For behold, I command, and I will shake the house of Israel to and fro among all the nations, like as one shaketh corn in a sieve; yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth. 10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say, Evil shall not overtake nor befall us.

11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David which is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: 12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations upon whom my name is called, saith Jehovah who doeth this.

Amos 9:8–12 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

I, the Almighty Lord, have my eyes on this sinful kingdom.

I will wipe it off the face of the earth.

But I won’t totally destroy the descendants of Jacob, declares the Lord

I’m going to give the order.

I will sift the nation of Israel out of all the nations

as if I were using a sieve.

Not one pebble will fall to the ground.

10 All the sinners among my people are thinking,

“Destruction will not catch up to us or run into us.”

In spite of this, they will be killed with swords.

11 On that day I will set up David’s fallen tent.

I will repair the holes in it.

I will restore its ruined places.

I will rebuild them as they were a long time ago.

12 They will capture the few survivors of Edom

and all the other nations that were under my authority,

declares the Lord, who will do these things.

Amos 9:8–12 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Look, the eyes of the Lord God

are on the sinful kingdom,

and I will destroy it

from the face of the earth.

However, I will not totally destroy

the house of Jacob —

this is the Lord’s declaration—

for I am about to give the command,

and I will shake the house of Israel

among all the nations,

as one shakes a sieve,

but not a pebble will fall to the ground.

10 All the sinners among My people

who say: “Disaster will never overtake

or confront us,”

will die by the sword.

11 In that day

I will restore the fallen booth of David:

I will repair its gaps,

restore its ruins,

and rebuild it as in the days of old,

12 so that they may possess

the remnant of Edom

and all the nations

that are called by My name —

this is the Lord’s declaration—

He will do this.

Amos 9:8–12 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

The eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom,

and I will destroy it from the face of the earth

—except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,

says the Lord.

For lo, I will command,

and shake the house of Israel among all the nations

as one shakes with a sieve,

but no pebble shall fall to the ground.

10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword,

who say, “Evil shall not overtake or meet us.”

11 On that day I will raise up

the booth of David that is fallen,

and repair its breaches,

and raise up its ruins,

and rebuild it as in the days of old;

12 in order that they may possess the remnant of Edom

and all the nations who are called by my name,

says the Lord who does this.

Amos 9:8–12 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Look, the eyes of my Lord Yahweh are on the kingdom of sin, and I will destroy it from the surface of the earth. However, I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,” declares Yahweh. “Yes, look, I am going to command and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations like one who shakes with a sieve, but not a pebble will fall to the ground. 10 All the sinners of my people will die by the sword, who say, ‘Evil will not overtake or confront us.’

11 On that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen, and I will repair its breaches and will raise up its ruins and will build it like the days of old. 12 Thus they may take possession of the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares Yahweh, who does this.

Amos 9:8–12 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

“I am the Lord and King.

My eyes are watching the sinful kingdom of Israel.

I will wipe it off the face of the earth.

But I will not totally destroy the people of Jacob,”

announces the Lord.

“I will give an order.

I will shake the people of Israel

among all of the nations.

They will be like grain that is shaken through a screen.

Not a pebble will fall to the ground.

10 All of the sinners among my people

will be killed with swords.

They say, ‘Nothing bad will ever happen to us.’

11 “The time will come when I will rebuild

David’s fallen tent.

I will repair its broken places.

I will rebuild what was destroyed.

I will make it what it used to be.

12 Then my people will take control of those

who are left alive in Edom.

They will also possess all of the nations

that belong to me,”

announces the Lord.

He will do all of those things.

Amos 9:8–12 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful kingdom,

And I will destroy it from the face of the earth;

Nevertheless, I will not totally destroy the house of Jacob,”

Declares the Lord.

“For behold, I am commanding,

And I will shake the house of Israel among all nations

As grain is shaken in a sieve,

But not a kernel will fall to the ground.

10 All the sinners of My people will die by the sword,

Those who say, ‘The calamity will not overtake or confront us.’

11 “In that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David,

And wall up its breaches;

I will also raise up its ruins

And rebuild it as in the days of old;

12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom

And all the nations who are called by My name,”

Declares the Lord who does this.
