In the first year of Darius, son of Ahasuerus: Darius is here given a father, whose name is rendered as Xerxes in the OG.12 There were Persian kings named Darius and Xerxes, but the relationship was reversed (Xerxes was the son of Darius I). Darius and Ahasuerus are mentioned together in Ezra 4:5–6*, in correct historical sequence with Darius first. Despite recurring attempts to identify Ahasuerus here with the Median king Cyaxares, father of Astyages (who was father-in-law of Cyrus),13
