Josiah, King of Judah (יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ, yoshiyyahu). The 15th king of Judah, circa 640–609 bc. Only eight years old when he became king. Ruled for 31 years. His name likely means “Yahweh will give.”

Josiah is most frequently remembered for his religious reforms, attempting to bring Judah back to exclusive worship of Yahweh in the late seventh century bc. The centerpiece of that reform movement was the discovery of a “book of the law” in the temple in 622 bc. He died in 609 bc, apparently in a military confrontation with Pharaoh Neco intercepting his march taking the Egyptian army north to Mesopotamia.
