Names for the Old Testament
“Old Testament” is a Christian label for the Jewish Scriptures that preceded the New Testament. Jews refer to their Bible as the Tanak, an acronym that reflects the traditional three-fold division into Torah (תורה, twrh), the “Law” or Pentateuch; Nebi’im (נביאים, nby'ym), the “Prophets”; and the Ketubim (כתובים, ktwbym), the “Writings.” Since “Old Testament” includes various additional books in different ancient versions, such as the Septuagint, the labels “Hebrew Bible” and “Hebrew Scriptures” are often used to refer to the Hebrew books of the Old Testament specifically.
