Overview
Each of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) recount Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, but the Gospel of John does not. The Synoptics describe Jesus’ temptation immediately after their accounts of His baptism, and each specifies that the Spirit directed Him to the wilderness. They identify the antagonist as Satan (σατανᾶς, satanas; in Mark 1:13; Matt 4:10), the devil (ὁ διάβολος, ho diabolos; in Matt 4:1, 5, 8, 11; Luke 4:2, 3, 5, 13), and “the tempter” (ὁ πειράζων, ho peirazōn; in Matt 4:3).
