JOB’S REPLY TO ZOPHAR

12 Then Job answered:

No doubt you are the people,

and wisdom will die with you!

But I also have a mind like you;

I am not inferior to you.

Who doesn’t know the things you are talking about?B,j

I am a laughingstock to myC friends,

by calling on God, who answers me.D

The righteous and blameless man is a laughingstock.k

The one who is at easel holds calamity in contempt

and thinks it is prepared for those whose feet are slipping.

The tents of robbers are safe,m

and those who trouble God are secure;

God holds them in his hands.E,n

But ask the animals, and they will instruct you;

ask the birds of the sky,

and they will tell you.o

Or speak to the earth, and it will instruct you;

let the fish of the sea inform you.

Which of all these does not know

that the hand of the Lord has done this?p

10 The life of every living thing is in his hand,

as well as the breath of all humanity.q

11 Doesn’t the ear test words

as the palate tastes food?

12 Wisdom is found with the elderly,

and understanding comes with long life.r

13 Wisdom and strength belong to God;

counsel and understanding are his.s

14 Whatever he tears down cannot be rebuilt;

whoever he imprisons cannot be released.t

15 When he withholds water, everything dries up,

and when he releases it, it destroys the land.u

16 True wisdom and power belong to him.

The deceived and the deceiver are his.

17 He leads counselors away barefoot

and makes judges go mad.v

18 He releases the bondsF put on by kingsw

and fastens a belt around their waists.

19 He leads priests away barefoot

and overthrows established leaders.x

20 He deprives trusted advisers of speech

and takes away the elders’ good judgment.

21 He pours out contempt on nobles

and disarmsA the strong.

22 He reveals mysteries from the darkness

and brings the deepest darkness into the light.a

23 He makes nations great, then destroys them;

he enlarges nations,b then leads them away.

24 He deprives the world’s leaders of reason,

and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.c

25 They grope around in darkness without light;

he makes them stagger like a drunkard.d

About Christian Standard Bible

The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.

The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.

The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.

The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
