24 Since Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not go to seek omens as on previous occasions, but turnedB toward the wilderness. 2 When Balaam looked up and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of Godc came on him, 3 and he proclaimed his poem:
The oracle of Balaam son of Beor,
the oracle of the man whose eyes are opened,
who sees a vision from the Almighty,d
who falls into a trance with his eyes uncovered:
your dwellings, Israel.
6 They stretch out like river valleys,C
like gardens beside a stream,
like aloes the Lord has planted,
like cedars beside the water.
and his seed will be by abundant water.
His king will be greater than Agag,e
and his kingdom will be exalted.
He will feed on enemy nations
and gnaw their bones;
he will strike them with his arrows.
or a lioness—who dares to rouse him?g
Those who bless you will be blessed,
and those who curse you will be cursed.h
10 Then Balak became furious with Balaam, struck his hands together, and said to him, “I summoned you to put a curse on my enemies, but instead, you have blessed them these three times. 11 Now go to your home! I said I would reward you richly,i but look, the Lord has denied you a reward.”
12 Balaam answered Balak, “Didn’t I previously tell the messengers you sent me: 13 If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go against the Lord’s command, to do anything good or bad of my own will? I will say whatever the Lord says.j 14 Now I am going back to my people, but first, let me warn you what these people will do to your people in the future.”
15 Then he proclaimed his poem:
The oracle of Balaam son of Beor,
the oracle of the man whose eyes are opened;
and has knowledge from the Most High,
who sees a vision from the Almighty,
who falls into a trance with his eyes uncovered:k
I perceive him, but not near.
A star will come from Jacob,
and a scepter will arise from Israel.l
He will smash the foreheadE of Moab
Seirm will become a possession of its enemies,
but Israel will be triumphant.
he will destroy the city’s survivors.
Amalek was first among the nations,n
but his future is destruction.
Your dwelling place is enduring;
your nest is set in the cliffs.
when Asshur takes you captive.
24 Ships will come from the coast of Kittim;a
they will carry out raids against Asshur and Eber,b
but they too will come to destruction.
About Christian Standard Bible
The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.
The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.
The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.
The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
